Recap on MIC

Math is Cool (MIC) was held past Saturday, October 23rd. After attending it at Redmond High School, here is a brief recap of the event.

While many local math competitions have one individual test and many team tests, MIC has three individual tests and three team tests.

There are four divisions:

Algebra II

The following is the schedule for the day:

9:00 – 9:30 Coaches pick up registration packets.
9:35 – 9:45 Orientation
9:50 – 10:05 Mental Math (8 questions for each student)
10:15 – 10:50 Individual Test (40 questions)
11:00 – 11:15 Individual Test (Multiple Choice 10 questions)
11:25 – 11:40 Team Test (10 questions)
11:45 – 11:55 Pressure Round (5 questions)
12:00 – 12:45 Lunch Break
12:55 – 1:15 College Bowl #1, 2 (10 questions/set)
1:15 – 1:35 College Bowl #3, 4 (10 questions/set)
1:35 – 1:55 College Bowl #5, 6 (10 questions/set)
2:05 Awards Ceremony

Details for each particular test:

Mental Math: Tests are 8 questions, ranging in topics and difficulty. No erasers.

Individual Test: Tests are 40 questions, with 30 basic questions each worth 1 point and 10 challenge questions worth 2 points each. No calculators.

Individual Multiple Choice Test: Tests are 10 multiple choice questions. 2 points are awarded for a correct answer, 0 for a blank answer, and -1 for an incorrect answer.

Team Test: Tests are 10 questions.

Pressure Round: Tests are 5 questions. An answer for a question must be submitted after 2 minutes. Points for each answer increase by 1 every time, starting at 1 point and ending at 5 points.

College Bowl: Teams sit along a table and hold onto a string attached to buzzer. The team that pulls the string first in 30 seconds has a chance to answer the question correctly for 1 point. If they answer the question wrong, however, the other team has 45 seconds to answer correctly to earn the point themselves. Buzz carefully!
